What is my skin type?

Great skin begins with knowing your skin type. Knowing your skin type will help you to determine what skin care regimen is right for you. It wasn't until I took the time to get to know my skin that I was able care for it properly. The major skin types are normal, combination, dry and oily. You can use the blotting test, to discover your skin type.

Here are the tools you will need:

1. Cleanser for normal skin or Facial cleansing soap
2. Lukewarm water
3. Clean Towel
4. Tissue or Blotting Paper

First, wash your face with a cleanser or facial cleansing soap. Second, rinse your face with lukewarm water and dry with a clean towel. Then wait for one hour. Next, take your blotting paper or tissue and blot your face.

Look at your tissue to see if you have one the following skin types:
  •  Normal skin - There will be very little oil on your tissue.
  • Combination skin -  The tissue will have oil in the form of the T-zone (this includes your forehead, nose, and chin).
  • Dry skin  - You will see no sign of oil on the tissue.
  • Oily - Oil will appear all over the tissue.
If you also experience itching or irritation during this test, you may have sensitive skin.  You should do the blotting test often especially during the fall, spring, summer and winter months because our skin type changes with seasons. Although in general I have combination skin, in the winter months I tend to have dry skin. So, I have to adjust my skin care regimen for each season.

Please feel free to leave any questions or comments below about your journey to discover your skin type. In a future posts, we will discuss each skin type and how to care for it.

And remember, you are perfect in beauty!

  1. This is wonderfully specific, I will try this test. I've been having issues with my skin for the past several months and couldn't figure out what was causing it. I used to have oily skin (at least so I thought) but over the winter it felt dryer. Now I'm starting to think using cleanser dries my face too much and I overcompensate with moisturizer which makes me oily. But my face does feel very itchy, tight, dry, and uncomfortable if I don't moisturize. I've also been getting a lot of redness and irritation and tiny bumps as well as some acne. It's very frustrating not knowing what to do. :( I can't wait to read your tips for the different skin types!

    1. Hi Emily,
Thank you for visiting my blog! We are are here to provide women and men of color with insight on how to take care of the skin they are in. Our skin changes during each season. So during the summer months, you may experience oily skin and in the winter you may have dry skin. You must adjust your skin care regimen to each season. The Nuekie pre-cleasnser may be the very prdouct that you need. The Nuekie pre-cleanser will prevent your skin from experiencing dryness after using your cleanser. Stay tuned to the blog to learn more on how to achieve beautiful skin.

  2. This is an amazing post as it is the first time I've ever seen someone explain how to determine skin type. I have oily skin but I'll be doing this little test today. What I really need is something that actually controls oil throughout the day. As a scientist I throughly enjoy 'beauty experiments'.

    1. Thank you! Please let me know how the test works out for you. When you say that you need something that controls the oil throughout the day are you talking about a moisturizer? If so, you may want to try an oil free moisturizer.
